Knowledge management and E-learning represent an opportunity and a challenge for the Information Society of tomorrow. Having recognised this trend, Università di Firenze, with the support and co-organisation by the European Commission, is organising the International Workshop on Knowledge Management and e-Learning will be held in Florence on October 21/22, 2002.
The Seminar will bring together European and international experts from all over the world to present and discuss the state-of-the-art of the involved disciplines, the technologies and the tools, remarkable case-stories, best practices, open issues and challenges.
This second edition, which follows the first one successfully held in Florence in 2001, is based on a novel approach which emphasises the tremendous opportunities offered by the convergence of Knowledge Management and e-Learning.
The aim of the Seminar is to discuss models and strategies for identifying the economic advantages that effective KM can provide in different sectors (both public and private) with a focus on the linkages between strategic capabilities, innovation, learning and managing knowledge. Key challenges within this domain are:
- how to link knowledge management (KM) at the level of an organisation, with KM and E-Learning at the level of people working within an organisation
- how to prepare organisations to monitor the fit between the external environment and their capabilities, their knowledge base, their performance and general competitiveness
- how to build capability in distributed co-operation in various environments, both for organisations and for individuals. How to prepare engineering students, engineers and knowledge workers for work in organisations that are more dynamic (responsive) than today, including virtual organisations.
The Seminar is a part of a strategy aimed at promoting new initiatives in the field of E-learning by Università di Firenze co-ordinated by C.S.I.A.F., Centro Servizi Informatici dell'Ateneo Fiorentino.
C.S.I.A.F is also the co-ordinating Partner of the ROCKET project (Roadmap to Communicating Knowledge Essential for the indusTrial environment - IST-2001-38245) committed to prepare a strategic roadmap for future developments in organisational learning relevant to the education of engineers and knowledge workers. The ROCKET Consortium puts together 17 organisations from 10 EU member states or associate states. Most of them are widely acknowledged as key players in research and/or in the market.
