Dr. Enrico Motta is the Director of the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) at the Open University in UK, a 60-people strong Research and Development Centre specialising in Web, multimedia and knowledge technologies. Dr Motta has a 1st Degree in Computer Science from the University of Pisa in Italy and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the Open University. His main area of research is knowledge technologies, where he has published extensively on topics such as: semantic web services, knowledge engineering, knowledge-representation, formal languages, multi-agent systems, knowledge acquisition, knowledge sharing and reuse and knowledge management. His current research focuses on reusable components for knowledge-based services — ontologies and problem solving methods — and the application of knowledge modelling techniques to knowledge management and semantic web services. Dr Motta is PI on the highly prestigious EPSRC-funded Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration on Advanced Knowledge Technologies (AKT) [http://www.aktors.org] and a co-investigator on the EPSRC Scholarly Ontologies project [http://kmi.open.ac.uk/projects/scholonto]. In addition, over the past decade, Dr Motta has been leading the Open University’s contribution to several high profile international research projects. These include VITAL (Esprit-II, P5365), HC-REMA (Telematics, P4124), Encode (Copernicus, P-691), Patman (Telematics, P4017), IBROW (IST-1999-19005) [http://kmi.open.ac.uk/projects/ibrow] and the OntoWeb Thematic Network [http://www.ontoweb.org], where he serves on the Executive Project Management Board. Dr Motta is also on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies and Electronic Transactions in Artificial Intelligence. He also serves on the programme committees of several major international conferences, such as ACM/AAAI/IFIP sponsored International Conference on Knowledge Capture, AAAI International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management, IEEE Digital Libraries, and several others. He has also been invited to sit on a variety of international strategic research bodies in both Europe and the US, including the EU Framework V Strategic Requirements Board, the US/NSF Knowledge and Distributed Intelligence Initiative Review Panel and the Joint EU/US Strategic Initiative on the Semantic Web. He has authored a book entitled “Reusable Components for Knowledge Modelling”, published by IOS Press [http://kmi.open.ac.uk/people/motta/book/].
